PEANUTS

A Quick word about Aflatoxins.

Aflatoxins have always existed, but in recent years the public, and indeed the trade have become more aware of the potential problems they can cause. Produced by a microscopic fungus, aflatoxins are toxic compounds which, if consumed in sufficient quantities can cause cancer and rapid death. The problem is not exclusive to birds - humans can also be affected, but birds are more likely to suffer because they have only small amounts of body fat, and accumulations of toxins can build up very rapidly. Aflatoxins are particularly dangerous because they are tasteless, and odourless, and even when a bird dies, the cause of death is not likely to be obvious, without detailed analysis.

Aflatoxin contamination of peanuts can be readily detected by laboratory analysis. All our peanuts are tested and are rejected if any trace of aflatoxin is present.

Peanut nibs.

Peanut nibs are small, bite-sized pieces of peanut, usually from the growing tip of the peanut. The growing point of any seed is where much of the goodness is stored, and as such, peanut nibs are a very nutritious food source. Peanut nibs are loved by a whole range of wild birds, and are included in virtually all our seed mixes. Hedgehogs also adore peanut nibs!
