SEED MIXES

The range is growing!

In the early days we offered just one seed mix, but things have moved on, and we're gradually adding to our range. Many of our seed mixes are blended specially for us in small quantities, to our own recipes.

As with all other products, always look for the BSA aproved seed mixes logo - it's your guarantee that the mix you're buying satisfies the minimum standards laid down by the Association.

General Purpose Wild Bird Food.

This was the first mix we ever stocked, and as the name suggests, it's the mix to use if you just want a straightforward wild bird food for general use on a birdtable, or for feeding from the ground. It is cereal-based, so is ideal if you have birds such as collared doves, sparrows and chaffinches. It is marginally more expensive than the sort of wild bird food you'll find in your average pet shop, but of visibly better quality. This seed is actually blended to a recipe, rather than thrown together from seed merchants leftovers, as are many inferior, non-BSA approved mixes! This mix can be used in a seed feeder, but the cereal content means that the feeder is more likely to clog up, and smaller birds such as finches are liable to throw out the bits they don't want, creating a mess underneath the feeder! For best results, we recommend using our special feeder mix.

Superior Wild Bird Food.

This is the next step up the ladder from the general purpose mix. Still contains some wheat, but not as much as the general purpose mix. Also contains some sunflower hearts, a range of smaller seeds and some juicy sultanas. Flavoured with aniseed oil to make it even more attractive!

All Season mix.

If you aren't inundated with chaffinches and sparrows, then it's best to avoid cereal-based mixes. The All Season mix is a good alternative. Safe to feed all year round, it contains no cereals, just a wide variety of seeds to appeal to as many birds as possible. It also has a higher oil content than our general purpose seed, making it particularly valuable to birds in spring and summer, when birds are breeding. Proving to be one of our most popular mixes!

Feeder mix.

If you feed the birds from tube-type feeders, then this is the mix to use! It is based on black and striped sunflower seeds, with peanut nibs, canary seed and oatmeal. All these ingredients flow quite easily, so there should be no more problems with clogged-up feeders, and therefore less chance of disease building up.

High Energy mix.

During winter, and at breeding and moulting times, birds need a food that has a high oil content. The High Energy mix contains a special blend of seeds chosen for their high oil content. Feed from the bird table or from a feeder.

High Energy Advanced mix.

This really is the ultimate in wild bird foods! If you like to spoil your birds really rotten, or if it's simply that you don't like having sunflower husks building up in vast quantities under the bird table, then this is the mix for you! Mixed to the same basic recipe as our High Energy mix, but we've removed the husks from the sunflowers. The result is a food that is exceptionally high in energy, very palatable, and produces virtually no mess! Feed it from the bird table, or on the ground. Avoid putting out too much at once, especially in wet weather, as the lack of husks mean that the seed can go soggy quicker. Then again, the birds in our garden devour it so quickly that there's little chance of that happening. Can also be fed from a feeder, which is perhaps better, as it keeps the seed dry, and rations the little devils!

Ground Feeders' mix.

Developed for birds that feed from the ground, including robins, blackbirds and thrushes. The mix contains all the things that these birds love - rolled oats, flaked maize, peanut nibs, sunflower hearts, as well as a liberal scattering of sultanas and raisins.
