MAMMAL FOODS

Red Squirrel Food.

The recent decline in the red squirrel population has been well publicised. If you have red squirrels visiting your garden, you should be feeding them! Our mix was originally formulated to a recipe approved by Red Alert, one of the early organisations concerned with red squirrel conservation. Feed in small quantities where you see squirrels or better still, use one of our squirrel feeders to prevent birds from eating the mix! We also stock large hazelnuts (filberts) - not cheap, but squirrels love them!

Unlike many squirrel food suppliers, we mix our squirrel food to a specification - not just to a price. Consequently, we don't include cheap fillers such as whole maize and monkey nuts. Maize might make the mix look more colourful and varied, but red squirrels don't really like it. We include pine nuts which are a natural food for red squirrels - they are very expensive, but it makes a more balanced feed. We also include a higher proportion of hazel nuts than other suppliers - again, not cheap, but better for the squirrels than too many peanuts.

Hazelnuts in shell.

Squirrels love hazelnuts - it's their favourite food! We have good quality Sicillian hazels in stock all year round. We have three reds visiting us at home and they are devouring loads of these!

Squirrel Feeders.

We supply two types - metal feeders made from powder-coated steel, and wooden ones. The feeders have a platform on which the squirrels sit. The feeder tube is clear polycarbonate. All the squirrel has to do is lift the lid, and help itself to the food. Sounds too good to be true, but take it from me, they do work!

Hedgehog Food.

Hedgehogs are becoming increasingly scarce. Our changing weather patterns are having an adverse impact on our spikey friends! Dry summers can lead to a shortage of food, whilst milder winters can lead to them not hibernating properly. We saw one a couple of years ago, out and about on New Years Eve. When this happens, the hedgehog will probably not have sufficient fat reserves to survive. Feeding hedgehogs, especially in autumn can help to get them in good condition for the winter.

We stock 3 types of food - Spike's Dinner, which is a complete crunchy dry food, Brambles which is also a crunchy dry food and I Love Hedgehogs, which is a moist food, with a blend of dried meats etc. We also stock Brambles tinned hedgehog food.
