LINKS

Links to other sites of interest.

These will be added to from time to time, as I discover new sites, so keep popping in for a look! Most have a bird or environmental theme, but I reserve the right to include some that are totally unrelated, should I so desire!

HALTWHISTLE WALKING FESTIVAL

Haltwhistle has lots of interesting walks, and the walking festival always offers a good selection to suit all abilities. The Walking Festival takes place twice a year. Take a look at the programme and see what's on offer!

NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS

Northern England's Independent Red Squirrel Conservation Group. We're very lucky indeed to still have small pockets of red squirrels in our area, although the numbers have fallen dramatically in the last couple of years - roughly the time when grey squirrels started to appear. Coincidence? I don't think so. NRS is an umbrella group for all local voluntary squirrel conservation groups across the North who are working very hard to conserve the red squirrels for the benefit of future generations.

WILDLIFE RESCUE ADVICE

When you find a sick or injured animal, you're always left wondering what is the best course of action to take. How do you identify what is wrong with the animal? How do you go about treating it? Where can you turn to for advice? This site, run by Knoxwood Wildlife Rescue Centre, contains a wealth of information on how to look after injured animals and birds. Highly recommended!

OK, so some of you probably don't like the idea of these things flapping round your face on a dark night, but they are really quite intersting creatures. Take a look inside...

NATURAL ENGLAND

The government organisation dedicated to wildlife conservation.

BRITISH TRUST FOR ORNITHOLOGY

Perhaps not as well known as the RSPB, but equally as active!

BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION

Was that a Painted Lady or a Peacock? You don't see so many butterflies these days, as there are fewer flower meadows. Do your bit - plough up the lawn, sow it with wildflowers, and turn the veg patch over to nettles! The neighbours will hate you, but Butterfly Conservation will LOVE you!

CUMBRIA WILDLIFE TRUST

HENRY DOUBLEDAY RESEARCH ORGANISATION

Not really linked directly with birds perhaps, but still relevant in my eyes! HDRA are the leading lights in the field of things organic. Converting to organic methods makes good sense and can do wonders for the wildlife in your garden. Into the bargain, organic food really does taste so much better!

COLIN THOMPSON, Author and Illustrator

Definitely nothing to do with birds, (unless you count Ethel the Chicken!) but an enjoyable site all the same. Prior to moving to Australia, Colin Thompson used to live just a few miles away from us, and we got to know him quite well. At that time, he was making pottery, and planting trees, but his real talent - illustrating, and indeed writing was lying more or less dormant. The annual Christmas card clearly demonstrated his ability though - there aren't many Christmas cards that the whole family spends hours studying, such is their detail! It therefore came as no surprise to us when Colin started to get his work published. It's not just the illustrations that are brilliant - it's the writing too. Few people can successfully write books for both children and adults, but Colin definitely can. Whilst his books are extremely funny, and the illustrations captivating, many of them carry quite a serious environmental message. Perhaps copies of them should be forwarded to the Environment Ministers of all the world's leading nations? I've enthused enough - now go and see for yourself!

THE NEST BOX DIARY

A fascinating insight into what goes inside a nest box. The family who run this site have a nest box with a built in infra-red camera and microphone. This page chronicles the comings and goings in the box, and makes fascinating reading.

RED SQUIRRELS NORTHERN ENGLAND

RSNE is the largest single species project in the UK raising awareness through education and conservation.
